IT Services companies provide Information Technology services to companies using products or projects, many of which may be developed by other companies.
What are IT Services?
Consulting - Typically, analysis and automating a company's business process like payroll or invoicing or sales reporting. Sometimes, consulting companies design and build portals (complex websites) which combine several of the business processes like the ones above.
Development and Maintenance of Internal Applications - Developing service oriented end-to-end solutions. An example of this is the complete computerization of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs by TCS.
Management of IT Infrastructure - For example, WIPRO managed the entire set of computers in the AP Secretariat with its team providing all support to the employees relating to their computers.
Testing Services - Testing teams test software products or applications developed by other companies.
Implementation of Enterprise Applications - ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) implementation is a typical example. Many IT services companies implement SAP ERP solutions or Oracle solutions in large Indian or foreign companies.

Typical Tasks Performed by IT Services Companies Include:
System Analysis - Understand the requirements of the company and what problem is being solved by computerization.
System Architecture and Design - Designing the complete system to implement the computerized solutions. This will include the hardware required, the software products to be used - e.g Windows, Oracle Databases, SAP ERP etc, and the local programs required to make the entire system work together.
System Execution and Implementation - Actually building the entire system to make it work and installing it in the required computers.
Training and Deployment -Training the users to use the system and deploying it in the customer company, and providing all assistance to the customer till the system is fully operational.
Maintenance - Ensuring that the system continues to work and attending to any problems which occur during use.

Jobs and Requirements:
IT Services companies employ large numbers of employees who are deployed in different projects for different customers. As soon as one project is completed the employee may have to move to another project for another customer.
Therefore the key requirements in an IT Services company are excellent knowledge of fundamentals, flexibility and ability to learn, teamwork and communication, apart from the technical knowledge required for the job. You will note that most of the skills required are soft skills.
Key jobs are in Software, System Analysis and HR which require industry specific abilities.
