Your Career

Fresh out of College? Preparing for that first job?

Let us put first things first

Do you know what you want? Let's start with some basics:

    * Look at your qualifications and skills
    * Do you have any special interests

The Internet is a great place

Research Industries. Do you want to be in IT or Power or Pharma or Fashion or ...

Research Companies. Check their websites, talk to alumni, talk to friends, their friends, anybody who is in a "good" job. Make a list of companies you want to apply for.

Find out about job functions. Know the difference between an Accountant, an Account Manager and a Finance Manager. Keep looking at this blog, we'll add links and information on such things. Click on label "Functions"

Do a realistic assessment about your college. Don't like what you see, no problem. Your superior preparation and CV should make-up. Read-up on at least one academic topic in depth. Select the topic based on what you like and what you learn about prospective employers' requirements. Get your basics on your main subjects right. Brush up on your project - this is most important.

Go online. Try out several sample aptitude tests. Get some friends to do mock interviews. Make a list of frequently asked questions. Heard of study groups? Make an "Interview Group" and do group discussions.

Understand that dress and grooming can be very important. You need a good set of formal clothes. Boys will also need a pair of well polished shoes.

Build a great resume. Check out this link.

Now how do you get your resume to the company you want

If you are still in college, make friends with the placement officer. Check that there is a good placement brochure for your college. Not there? Help make it. Its your requirement. Get a list of HR managers of companies of your interest and make the institute send your CV. If you have made a proper CV you should get a positive response. Here's where your "Interview Group" will help. If a few impressive CVs reach a company, they will be more inclined to come to your campus.

There are many other alternatives. Google job sites, approach companies directly, go through friends, read the newspapers.

Learn about the actual selection process beforehand and check if you are prepared on all aspects.

During the Recruitment Process itself

Be confident. You have already prepared well if you have done the things listed above. Give positive answers - give it your best shot.

You want that dream job! Give yourself that best shot to succeed by preparing.

Remember, the more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed in war
