Law as a Career

Till a few years back there were only two options for lawyers – practice civil law or become a criminal lawyer. The scenario has changed completely now and there are many career options after you gain a law degree. You don’t need to become an individual lawyer practicing his profession from small home offices and crowded cubicles and rooms – grandly called “chambers” – attached to various courts or join the ranks of lawyers in frayed gowns sitting on the roadside eking out a living as notaries. Let’s look at how to gain a law degree and what career options are available.

Alternate Careers

We can all dream of going to an IIT and landing a good job. But, do we have the interest and, more importantly, the aptitude? What are your long term goals? Your goals, not your parents. Are you (or your parents) ready to look at alternate careers, something beyond engineering or medicine? Do you want to wait till you are 55 or 60 years old and say I wish I had followed my dream and become a _ _ _ _ ?

I have had innumerable students asking me if school and college grades are important. To be employable, a "Professional story" will give you a head start. Grades provide the only tool to evaluate your capabilities and sincerity in the absence of the Professional Story and some validation of your claims in your CV.

Preparing for your Career

In the previous post we talked about deciding what you want to be. It is always be useful to make a roadmap with job titles - for example, you want to be a brand manager in 3 years and then become head of marketing in 5 years or a lead programmer in 2 years and a software architect in 5 years.

Your roadmap is only indicative and helps you frame the problem so that you have actionable tasks.
