Rate Your Institute

Why do you need to rate your college?

You want to know the facts about your college if you are already studying there. You especially need to know the good points and the bad. Your assessment could help others make the right choice. To join or reject your college.

There may be things which can be improved through simple student action - like having a good employment brochure; a good website; an alumni database; an employer database; a more responsive placement cell etc.

You need to be able to prepare to augment through your own means, gaps caused by weak areas in your college. The good news is - if you are prepared and clear, it is very simple to do this AND there are many more jobs than there are employable candidates.

If you are looking at possible colleges to join, before you go for counseling or apply, visit as many colleges as possible and find out details by meeting the officials there. DON'T be afraid to ask. The following can be used as a checklist to assess the colleges. Make a table and enter the score for each college.

So let's look at the Assessment Parameters - we'll shortly have an assessment tool for you to use.

  • Faculty: Faculty to Student Ratio, how many have post graduate degrees, how many PhDs; How many with more than 10 years experience and how many with industry experience. Specially check about the department you want to join. Find out how many of the staff have been there for more than 5 years. You may not get all the answers but you will get a feel. Rate the college on faculty - 1 for very poor to 5 for very good with 3 as average.
  • Infrastructure: This is generally easier. Look at buildings, classrooms, auditorium, library, hostels, computers/ laptops, network & connectivity. Again rate the college on infrastructure. Use the same method as you did for faculty.
  • Teaching Methods and Laboratories: Does the college use methods other than lectures to train the students? Are the laboratories properly equipped? Are there academic seminars? Are there in-house projects which are demonstrated or used. Are there college chapters of professional bodies? Rate the college on these parameters on a 1 to 5 scale as above.
  • Alumni and Association with Industry: Does the college have an active alumni association? Is the college linked to any industry or company? Does the college have regular "Industry Meets" or seminars or "Industry Visits" or Summer / Project Placements?
  • Placements: Look for past placement history. In the last 5 years how many students were placed and in which companies? Are these numbers increasing? Does the college have a placement officer whose only job is placement assistance? Does the company have a placement database? Is there a good brochure and website? Is there a database of company HR managers? Is there an active student placement representative and body?
Grade the colleges out of 25 Points, max five points for each of the above attributes, and compare colleges
