A Career in the Indian Armed Forces

The Indian armed forces are, perhaps, the only profession under the Indian Government where selection is purely on the basis of merit and NOT on region, caste, religion or language. If you have the qualities desired, they will select you. And you will be one of the select few who will get the opportunity to wear the coveted uniform of an officer of the Indian armed forces, with pride. The salary and perks are good; but if you are looking to have an easy time, I would suggest you look elsewhere.
Recruitment into the officer cadre of the defence forces is done by different methods and categorized into two main Commissions, Permanent Commission (where you serve till you retire) and Short Service Commission (where the minimum period of service is 10 years).

Graduates, between the ages of 19- 24, can write the bi- yearly CDSE (Combined Defence Service Examination). Those who qualify are called to a Selection Board to undergo personality assessment tests.

Engineering graduates, between 20- 27 years of age, have schemes where they are campus recruited before they complete their graduation or after obtaining their B.E/ B Tech, and have to undergo the same testing. On completion of their graduation, they are sent to various training institutions depending on their choice of Army, Navy or Air Force.

To become an officer, your 5 day selection/ assessment process is done at one of various Selection Boards situated all over the country. Your travel expenses (if you are appearing for the first time), boarding and lodging are all taken care of. Those appearing for the pilots course are tested for one additional day when they are subjected to a once in a lifetime test called PABT (Pilot Aptitude and Battery Test). The 5 day testing comprises of psychological profiling, group tests and a personal interview. This process, like all previous processes, is totally free from external influences, so if you are good you can make it.

Once selected by a selection board, you will need to undergo a comprehensive medical examination. And after all this is over, your name will have to appear in the final merit list after which you will be called to join training at an institution, based on your choice of Army, Navy or Air Force. Those who complete their training successfully become Commissioned Officers.
